It's all horribly sad. Trav was talking just last week about another probable job in Singapore and stated emphatically that we WOULD get to Thailand this time.

Destination: Pucket. (POO-ket) Where 70% of the casualities were tourists.

I think NOT. Although... what are the chances of something so horrible happening again in the next six months?

I may be wrong, but based on the numbers and the pictures I've seen it is my impression the deaths only happened on and near the areas close to the ocean.

If you think about it, in terms of height this wasn't a monster wave. It is a monster wave because of its scope and that it hit thousands of miles of beaches across two continents with no warning. This wasn't one of those Hollywood movie waves that wiped out entire cities.

There has been a lot of talk about the lack of a tsunami monitoring system in the Indian Ocean.

From what I've read, government monitors in Japan, United States, Australia and even Indonesia, had issued warnings of a tsunami, which are practically guaranteed with an earthquake of 9.0.

In other words, lack of monitoring isn't the problem here, at least in this circumstance. In some cases, word wasn't passed along because the area of concern was outside their respective jurisdiction. In case of the Indonesian monitor, he repeatedly tried to call Jakarta without success.

It is remarkable that a wave could travel up to 8 hours and people in those distant locations would not be warned.

We have a tsunami warning system on the pacific coast of America. I saw something on it last night where there are even marked paths as to where to go once the warning sirens go off.
